Wadmalaw

Bordered by Bohicket Creek and the North Edisto River, Wadmalaw is more state of mind than mere location. The proudly self proclaimed ‘back porch of Charleston’ is a world of generational farmland, deep water access, undeveloped acreage and more dirt roads than highways. No major hotels, restaurants or shopping, but plenty of pristine vistas, wildlife, a sea salt harvesting pond and America’s only working tea plantation. In 1890 a group of planters organized a sailing regatta in Rockville and this year will mark the 134th anniversary of the perennial event. The estate sized properties command premium prices. Sailboats and larger power craft have access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Edisto Inlet.
